The Life and Strange Surprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe of York. With An Account how he was at last as strangely deliver'd by Pirates. Written by Himself. Despite the title, this book was actually written by Daniel Defoe and first published in 1719. Some scholars consider it to be the very first novel in Enligh literature. It is the story of a man stranded on a desert island. It is widely speculated that the story was loosely based on the "real life" story of one Alexander Selkirk, a Scottsman who was stranded on a Pacific Island for a period of 4 years. Indeed, this has led to the island, formerly named Más a Tierra, to be renamed Robinson Crusoe Island. This book has been the source of countles adaptations and inspiration for many authors and storytellers. |
